Before we can get there, this tutorial will will explain how the site works.

Step 1: Register (Create an Account)
Before you can start receiving the full benefits of iTaggz.com, you must first create an account.
iTaggz.com uses OpenID, a relatively new and increasingly popular FREE service that provides the user with a single account (username and password) which allows them to sign on to multiple websites.

Go to MyOpenID to create a new account. (Opens in a new window).
Follow the instructions on that site. The sign up process is similar to most other websites so it should feel very familiar.

Two things to note about an OpenID account:
1. The username looks different than what you may be used to.
An OpenID username looks like a website URL, e.g. http://itaggz.myopenid.com or itaggz.myopenid.com for short.

2. When initially signing in, the system only requests your username and no password.
The system will then determine your OpenID Provider from your username and send you to their site to complete the login process. Once your ID is verified you will be sent back to iTaggz.com.

Step 2: Login
Once you have created an OpenID and logged in with your OpenID Provider, such as MyOpenID.com, without closing your browser, return to iTaggz.com and login there.

Login Screen

Enter your full OpenID in the text box as shown above and click Verify.

This will send you back your OpenID Provider. If you are not already logged in with them, you will be prompted to login.

Once logged in, you will be asked to select a profile for use with iTaggz.com and also to grant permission to share this information with iTaggz.com.

It is strongly recommended that you permanently grant access to iTaggz.com.
This can always be undone later, if you change your mind.

NOTE: If you ever find yourself on your OpenID Provider's website and do not know how to get back to iTaggz.com, just go directly to the iTaggz.com. If you are shown the login page, enter your OpenID and click Verify. In other words, repeat step 2.

Now that you've made it this far, relax. The hard steps are now complete.
Steps 3 and 4 are where the good stuff happens...

Step 3: Create a Bookmark
The image below shows the input form used to create a new bookmark.
Step 4 will explain how to get to this screen.
But first, the information needed to create a bookmark will now be explained.

Annotated Edit Page

1. Item "1" is the website URL and is required for all bookmarks on iTaggz.com.
A valid URL must be complete, such as "http://itaggz.com" and not just "itaggz.com"

2. Item "2" is the bookmark title and is also required for all bookmarks.
The title can also be thought of as the bookmark name and is used to identify the bookmark on the bookmark listing page.

3. Item "3" is the website or bookmark description and is optional.

4. Use item "4" to enter the tags for the bookmark.
Tags are a space separated list of words used to describe the website being bookmarked. They can be any words you choose but are restricted to letters, numbers, along with the underscore, hyphen, and under certain circumstances, a colon.

See the FAQ for additional information on tags including some useful tagging tips.

5. This shows all of the tags associated with the current URL.
After entering a URL in the box labelled "1", the system will perform a search to determine if anyone else has bookmarked that website. If any are found, it will display in the area labelled "5", all of the tags associated with that URL.

If you click on any of these tags shown there, it will be copied into the tag text box labelled "4".

6. To go back to the bookmark listing without saving any changes, click "cancel."

7. To save your changes, please click the "Save" button.
The system will validate your information. If it is valid, the changes will be saved and will return to the default page ("My Bookmarks" tab).

If any of the information is not acceptable, you will be returned to the form to fix the errors, which will be highlighted in red.

Step 4: Browse/Search

The annotated image below shows the default view for someone who has created a few bookmarks.

Annotated Bookmark Listing

1. "My Bookmarks" Tab
The main content area of iTaggz.com is subdivided into tabs. All of your bookmarks will be displayed in the "My Bookmarks" tab. In this tab, you can browse all of your bookmarks or perform a search within your list of bookmarks.

When you first sign in, this is the tab that will be displayed and will show your most recent bookmarks. Clicking on the iTaggz.com logo will take you back to this "home" page.

When in search mode, meaning you have just performed a search, switching tabs will resubmit the search within the scope of the new tab that you've switched to. In that way if you can't find something from your bookmarks, you can search the community to see if someone else has bookmarked it.

2. "Community" Tab
This tab shows bookmarks created by all users of iTaggz.com. Only bookmarks that have been tagged as private will be hidden from this view. Note that your private bookmarks will still be visible to you in this tab.

When in search mode, switching tabs will also perform the search in the new tab. In that way if you only want to see which of your bookmarks match the search criteria, simply switch to your personal tab.

3. The Search Box
To perform a search, simply type in the tags you wish to search on and hit enter (or click "Search"). The results will be displayed within the scope of the currently active tab.

You may also perform a search by clicking on any of the tags shown on the page (see point 10 below).

4. Creating a Bookmark
To create a new bookmark, click this "Create Bookmark" link. It will always be visible just below the search box.

There is an easier way to bookmark websites with iTaggz.com. This requires a bookmark be placed on your browser. See our Browser Tools help page for additional details.

5. Listing of your Bookmarks
Click this link to view a list of your bookmarks in reverse order of date created/updated.

Note that only the first 100 hundred will be shown via this method.

6. Favorite Bookmarks
iTaggz.com has the concept of favorite bookmarks. It could be that you have 50 websites bookmarked but you regularly visit only 5 of those, while the others are just used for reference.

To quickly bring up that list of regularly visited bookmarks, simply click this link.

How will the system know which are your favorites? It doesn't. You will need to tell it by tagging those bookmarks with a special tag called "i:favorite".

7. This represents the page title.
All pages on iTaggz.com will have a title. When viewing or searching bookmarks, the title changes to indicate exactly what you're looking at.

For example, when you first sign in, it shows "Recent Bookmarks", however, after a search, the title changes to "Search Results"

8. The Bookmark Title.
If recall from the Bookmark Creation process explained earlier, all bookmarks must have a title. Label "8" represents that title for the bookmark shown.

Click on this to go to the actual website. Note that it will open in a new window or a new tab (depending on your browser and its configuration).

9. The Website/Bookmark description.
Recall again that when creating a bookmark, an optional description is requested. If a description is provided, it will be shown here.

Note that only the first 150 or so characters are displayed (to avoid screen clutter).

10. Bookmark Tags
All bookmarks created on iTaggz.com must have at least one tag. Item "10" shows the list of tags entered for this bookmark.

These tags are all click-able. Clicking on one of those will perform a search of all bookmarks that use this tag.

See the FAQ for additional information on tags including some useful tagging tips.

11. Bookmark Options
If you are the owner of a bookmark, "edit" and "delete" be displayed here. This of course allows you to either edit or delete the bookmark. Delete will request confirmation before actually deleting the bookmark.

If you are not the owner of the bookmark "copy" will be displayed instead. Click this to bookmark the website yourself. This is encouraged because it ensures that the bookmark will still be available to you even if the current owner deletes it.

This completes the tutorial.
