General
What is iTaggz.com?
iTaggz.com is an online bookmarking service. As all bookmarks are stored privately and securely online,
they can be accessed from anywhere, instead of just the computer they were bookmarked from.
What are the features of iTaggz.com?
iTaggz.com provides a number of features with lots more planned over the next few months. Currently,
users can bookmark any site and tag the site with whatever keywords they choose.
Users can also browse all of their bookmarks or search for websites based by tags (keywords).
iTaggz.com also provides a certain level of Social Bookmarking services. Although the creator of a bookmark is never revealed, the site itself may be useful to other users, so by default, all websites bookmarked at iTaggz.com will be displayed in the community tab. All users are then able to search the system to locate other sites of interest that have been cataloged by humans and found by them to be useful.
Note that the creator of a bookmark still has the option to hide a website from the community. Simply tag the website with "i:private" to keep it from others.

Usage
Is a tour or tutorial available?
Yes. A tutorial is available with
screen shots that explains various aspects of the site.
After performing a search, how do I get rid of the search results?
Click the logo at the top of the page or the "home" link at the bottom of the page.
This always takes you to the home page.
iTaggz.com has 3 modes that affect its behaviour. When you first sign in or whenever you go to the home page, iTaggz.com goes into default mode, where it displays the default content for the active tab (your most recent pages on the "My Bookmarks" tab or popular bookmarks on the "Community" tab).
If you perform a search, iTaggz.com goes into search mode. Switching tabs will perform the same search in the new tab.
To get back to "default" mode, click the iTaggz.com logo at the top of the page.
The third mode is edit mode. You get into this mode by creating a new bookmark, or editing/copying an existing bookmark. Once you leave edit mode, iTaggz.com goes into default mode.

Is there an easy way to import bookmarks from my browser or other sources to iTaggz.com?
Not at this time. In addition, there are no immediate plans to provide such a feature although
one may be provided in the future.
This can be seen as a good opportunity to review all of your current bookmarks. Some of these web pages may no longer exist or you have no further interest in them.

Tagging
What is Tagging?
Tags are keywords used to describe a something. They are very useful for searching as the keywords
are easy to locate and help categorize or organize the content.
At iTaggz.com, Tags are one word space-separated list of keywords.
We define tagging as the process of labelling content, such as a website, with descriptive keywords, that can be later used for a number of things, such as searching.

Tagging Tips
Keep it simple.
Be consistent
Tags are simple keywords used to describe a website. Always use terms that are easily recalled
by you and keep the number of tags used to a minimum. Three to 5 would be a good number for
each website.
The tags used should have some or all of the following characteristics:
- a subset of the tags should summarize the basic content of the site
- a subset of the tags should categorize or organize the content
- a subset of the tags may be one or more of the available "i:taggz" that assign special meaning by the application.
Examples:
If you're tagging an article that describes how to make make a "Banana Cupcake", descriptive keywords could be something like "cupcake", and "banana".
For the same article, a categorization tags could be something like "recipes."
Suppose you like to cook and have found a number of recipes online, the "recipes" tag can then be used to group all of your recipe bookmarks. If you want to find all of your recipes, simply search for "recipes" and the cup cakes recipe will be listed as well as all other recipes saved.
Finally, suppose you find yourself looking up the "Banana Cupcakes" recipe a lot, you may tag it with "i:frequent". This is one of the special tags, collectively referred to as "i:Taggz" that is available for use. On the "My Bookmarks" Tab is a link, just below the search box, labelled "Favorites." Clicking on this link will quickly bring up all bookmarks that were tagged as "i:frequent."

Be consistent
Consistency makes it much easier to find bookmarks, which is the ultimate goal of bookmarking
any website - easy retrieval later on.
There are two main ways to achieve consistency:
1. Do not use word variations.
iTaggz.com has a number of features that assist in ensuring consist terms are used across the board. Whenever you are tagging a website, it will display all tags that other users have used to tag the same website.
You may also display your Tag Cloud on the right panel. This shows some or all of the tags you have used in the past.
In create/edit mode, simply click on one of these tags to tag a website with that tag.
There are two main ways to achieve consistency:
1. Do not use word variations.
When tagging a recipe on "Banana Cupcakes" do not use a collection of tags such as:
"banana", "cup", "cake", cakes", "cupcake", "cupcakes", cup_cakes", "banana_cup_cakes", "recipe", "recipes".
Pick one version of each word. The following is much better:
"banana", "cupcakes", "recipe".
There are no word variations but the meaning and categorization have not been lost.
2. Use the same tags across multiple bookmarks:"banana", "cup", "cake", cakes", "cupcake", "cupcakes", cup_cakes", "banana_cup_cakes", "recipe", "recipes".
Pick one version of each word. The following is much better:
"banana", "cupcakes", "recipe".
There are no word variations but the meaning and categorization have not been lost.
The illustration above shows the problem with word variations. Using the simplied set
of tags solves the problem for one bookmark, however, to be truly effective, this approach
needs to be used across all bookmarks.
This means, using "cupcakes" for all bookmarks that refers to making cupcakes and never using another variation such as "cup" and "cake" or "cup_cakes."

I've noticed the term 'i:Taggz' and 'iTaggz.com' used in several places. Is there a difference?
iTaggz.com refers to this website, which is an online bookmarking service where all bookmarks must be tagged.
In keeping with the tagging approach already in use here and made popular on other websites, iTaggz.com
decided to use special tags to extend the functionality of the system.
For example, instead of using a checkbox to mark a website as private, a special tag ('i:private') is used. All of these tags collectively are referred to as "Intelligent Tags" or "i:Taggz" for short. They are pre-defined by the system and can change the way the system handles that bookmark, hence the term "intelligent". 'i:Taggz' can easily be recognized as they al start with 'i' and are the only tags that contain ':', a colon.
Of course, there is also the coolness factor. "i:Taggz" sounds better than "s:Tags" (or "Smart Tags"), which was the original name.
A complete list of all current i:Taggz can be found here (login required).

What is a "Tag Cloud"?
iTaggz.com sometimes shows a "Tag cloud" in the right panel of the page. This cloud is composed of a random sample
of tags where the size of the font is a visual representation of the tag's relative popularity. The larger the font,
the more popular the tag is.
If the user is viewing their personal ("My Bookmarks") tab or is creating/editng a bookmark, a random sample of just their tags is shown. Popularity in this case is determined by the number of websites the user has used this tag on.
If a user is in the "Community" tab, a random sample of all tags used by all users is shown. Popularity in this case is determined by the number of websites (for all users) that the tag is associated with.

User Account/OpenID
Why do I need an Account?
iTaggz.com is an online bookmarking service. Since the focus is on your bookmarks, an
account is needed in order to show personalized content.
How do I create an account?
iTaggz.com does not provide its own account management module. Like most Internet users, the authors of iTaggz.com
is tired of filling in new user sign up forms and has therefore opted to use a new open, decentralized login system called
OpenID.
Creating an account at iTaggz.com requires that you first have an OpenID account. If you already have an OpenID account, all you need to do is grant iTaggz.com access to that account.
See "How do I login?" below for details on creating an (OpenID) account and logging into the system.
